Hello there! Welcome, and let me introduce myself! My name is Kathie, and as you may have guessed, I love yoga - practicing, learning and teaching yoga. I am so much more than a yoga teacher, but being a yogi is one of my favourite roles. I am a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Business Valuator, a business mentor, and a Board of Director for a local Not-for-Profit.
As a creative individual, I’ve always loved having the opportunity to share my ideas, opinions and talents with others around me. I discovered instagram back in 2015 and used that platform to improve my own practice, and I've decided recently to take my teachings to YouTube in an effort to connect with as many people as possible, giving anyone with a screen and an internet connection, the opportunity to practice yoga whenever, wherever!
Past:
My journey started when I attended my first yoga class back in 2008 (where I fell asleep in savasana). I was so embarrassed and didn't return to another class until 2 years later. I discovered a style called Moksha (hot yoga) and I was hooked! I loved the physical challenge, and the sweat gave me something tangible to validate my efforts! The young yogi in me at the time was only familiar with the asana limb of the yoga practice. It wasn't until I began my 200 hour yoga teacher training that my eyes were opened to the wholistic practice of yoga. The eight limbs of yoga encompasses essentially comes from the ancient Yoga Sutra texts and describes how to live a purposeful life. At that time I was working for the international accounting firm, Deloitte LLP, and was constantly stressed out about meeting work demands and juggling my own commitments. I started to incorporate some of the limbs of yoga, in particular, the pranayama (breath). The more I became aware of my breathing, the more I became better and recognizing stress and taking steps to actively reduce stress. When I moved over to PWC LLP, another accounting firm, several years later, I realized I was much better at managing my own workload, staying on top of the stress. This was when I learned to practice dhyana (meditation). The seventh limb of yoga focuses on being keenly aware without focus. At this stage, the mind has been quieted, and in the stillness it produces few or no thoughts at all. This was when I began exploring more passively practice, yin, restorative, and meditation. My practice had shifted from a purely physical practice to a more mental focus. Building mental resilience to external distractions was a strength in itself.
Present:
Currently, I work as an auditor in Ottawa. I have been teaching yoga since 2014 and loving the balance of my analytical and creative minds. I have a wide collection of experiences that I can relate to many of my students: being a first time yogi, being a newcomer to Canada, being a desk worker, being required to perform under stress. I incorporate into my classes based on the needs of my students, or anticipating their needs! I love to share my knowledge and getting feedback from students on how their day, week, or life has gotten better is the most rewarding part of being a teacher! I hope to use my social media platforms to share my journey, and to teach others in an informative and fun way!
